Have to go to Long Island... traffic?

My boyfriend and I need to go down to Long Island and we've been told by different people that traffic was terrible. Is this true? This is what keeps us from going down there. On the other hand, I did talk to other people, and they told me at it wasn't that bad at all.

Anybody that lives around there could light me up? Is there routes, bridges to avoid to get there? What are the best hours? We are going down to see a car, and would maybe bring it back on a trailer. Anything we should now?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I have lived and worked all over long island my entire life. What town are you headed to and where from? Typically main roads get busy from 8am to 10am and then 3:30pm to 6pm. So if you can get in and out between those times it would be best.

I agree. I don't live there, but travel there and near there often enough. When are you going? During the week avoid the bridges near rush hour.

We have to go all the way to Sag Harbor :indifferent: ...
And we would be coming in from the 91, so merging on 95...

Isn't there a ferry that we can take? Is it very busy during the weekend? But it probably doesn't 'work' at this time of year, or even in a month from now...

Traffic always sucks during the week. When its summer time it'll suck on the weekends too. Definitely one of the reasons I avoid long island.
  • You can do a ferry from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson - http://www.88844ferry.com/ They run 365 days a year.

If you do that you will have bypassed the majority of the traffic in the city and Nassau. Good Luck!

If you are going to sag harbor, I might try the Orient point ferry instead... it takes you further down the island then Port Jeff.

I will. I already took a look at it last night, and was wondering how much longer it would take if I was to not take the ferry and drove all the way to the bridge and to Sag Harbor, in the traffic. So I guess the ferry is worth the $100

Keep in mind that gas is expensive on The Island. Towing will obviously give you worse gas mileage. If they let you bring the trailer on the ferry, it's probably the best way to go. When I've taken it, I've packed lunch in one of those cooler bags. They have a place to buy food, but most of it is fried or pre-packaged. :) The ferry is nice, relaxing, and definitely worth it.

It's a nice trip and you don't have to worry about getting stuck in traffic near the Cross Island or Clearview if you're heading back to 95.

Thanks, that's a great tip! I will definitely make sure we have stuff to eat on the ferry. It's almost a 9 hour drive for us to go down there; we are just North of the Vermont border, in Canada, so that's the reason why I'm asking all those questions about traffic. We'll be tired of the driving and definitely won't feel like being stuck in traffic. Plus, we might even be able to take a nap on the ferry before getting to Sag Harbor ! That's definitely something to think about!!
