So what protein or snack bars do you guys suggest?

Does skipping one meal (most likely breakfast) really a good choice, while replacing that food with a protein bar? Will you still be hungry, or should it feel like a regular meal?

Same for protein shakes, what do you guys suggest and are they really a good choice?

Last, my friend takes One a Day and some other metabolism/diet pill - are those safe/good?

Thanks guys!! :)

  • phd diet whey protein. its helped me lose nearly 30 pounds in 6 months. get chocolate orange flavour (add water not milk) its amazing. also have it within half an hour of exercise xxx
  • SlimFast isn't all that great. I went to a Weight Loss Clinic in Indiana, PA and he told me that it has too much sugar. That when I'm looking for a bar to try and find one that has 3x more protein than sugar grams. That leaves me pretty much with all of the adkins bars are good! I didn't like the taste of them so I buy the fiber one chocolate chip bars. They are tasteyyy. lol. As far as protein drinks with a good amount of protein, good taste, and low sugar.."Pure Protein" I get the chocolate frosty kind! I wouldn't reply on diet pills. The weight WILL start to come off. IF you want an extra boost I heard cinnamon pills boost metabolism and lots of water. I have slimquick pills though I took some today to see if I lose any extra this week compared to last week.

I recommend eating whole food. If you HAD to do a bar and/or protein I'd suggest a snickers bar and a protein powder over some of the bars on the market.

There's nothing wrong with skipping breakfast as long as you are meeting your calorie goals during the day. I suggest doing what is most convenient for you and what allows you to stay within the limits of your diet. A protein bar does nothing for me personally. Maybe make me angry or something.

There's alot of misinformation out there regarding "protein shakes". They will do nothing magical for you like some will want you to believe. For satiety purposes, drinking your calories is less satisfying than actually chewing them. There are many good tasting protein powders out there. I would opt for a protein powder, not a meal replacement powder. Be sure to check the nutritional facts, as some contain excess carbs and fat. Remember, "protein powder" is a supplement, meant to bridge the gap where you have a deficiency in your diet. Like most people who don't have a good handle on their diet, they are deficient in protein. Use it as such. Don't use it thinking it's going to make you lose weight.

Nothing wrong with taking a multi-vitamin. I wouldn't recommend taking diet pills. Nothing will help you more than eating at a moderate calorie deficit and exercising a bit more.

It doesn't matter when you drink it. What's important is you eat your goal calories.

You really have to label-shop on bars. Some have a bunch of sugar and junk in them. Check the nutrients, too. If you are going to replace a third of your daily intake with one, it better be good! I suggest really trying to get a meal in. I've had to have a bar in place of a meal now and then, and while it will satisfy you physically and keep you from gnawing your own hands off at the wrists, it really isn't satisfying mentally or emotionally, IMHO. I usually felt like eating the house later in the day... bad trade.

I had quite a love affair with the supreme carb conscious 50g bars for afternoon snacks for a while. Low sugar, low carb, high protein, and decent nutrition, but the feeling of eating a candy bar. Found 'em at Walmart. Kind of pricey, tho.

I use protein shakes after my strength training (chocolate, with natural peanut butter on whole grain toast..YUM!). Sometimes with breakfast, if I think might have a higher carb day (kids b-day parties, company meals, etc). Get it in early, ya know? Whole foods are preferrable, but no one has unlimited time and money to do that every day! Life happens.

Vitamin supplements are a safe bet. Don't pay a lot of attention to claims of increased metabolism; easy, dramatic weight-loss "while you: eat whatever you want / sleep / learn basket-weaving!"...etc. Read the fine print. "Studies suggest...<insert unlikely correlation here>..." is how companies spin incomplete scientific research to make money. If diet pills worked, we'd ALL be skinny!

Eat sensibly, exercise regularly. THERE'S your diet pill! Remember, this is a process. Start trying to find foods that fit your life, your tastes, and your nutritional needs. It's a puzzler sometimes, but you'll get the pieces to fit, with practice. Don't be afraid to try new foods or experiment with variations.

Just don't forget: Portion size is critical. Weigh or measure EVERYTHING! And if you BITE IT, WRITE IT!!!
  • I think it's just supposed to be good to get the protein in after your exercise since you are brekaing down your muscels when working out. Or something like that. Chocolate orange flavor? lol woah!
