hey there, my sodium levels are through the roof, and I know a few things to cut out. I need a lot of extra calories on certain days to eat back after working out, but don't want to overdo the sodium. what are some good, easy, quick foods high in cals, low in sodium?

Protein shakes are always good after a workout!

    Here are some other examples!

My suggestion : Chicken or Ground Turkey in a salad or low sodium bread/wrap

Be careful of the sauces you are using!

Avocados, unsalted nuts, potatoes, fresh meat prepared without marinades or salt-free liquids and cooking juices.

Low fat cheeses, all-natural guacamole (I buy the Wholly 100 cal packs, great alternative to sauce on sandwiches), organic breads, Kashi cereals, peanut butter, brown rice.

Egg whites are not high in calorie but they are low in sodium. Great for making a scramble-spinach, turkey, cheese. Will keep you full.

Remember to check the ingredients and nutrition values on all food packages. This will help you to pick better foods. And try to buy all-natural and organic products.

Just about anything you cook yourself!

    - Stir fried veggies with beef or chicken (don't use a premade sauce make your own) with brown rice.
    - Pasta with a creamy sauce (yum!)
    - Natural yoghurt with honey and banana
    - banana smoothie
    - steak and veggies and rice or pasta
    - Fried rice with eggs on top - my favourite (but you have to make it yourself to cut down the sodium!)
    - Eggs - scrambled, fried, omelette - however you like them. Just give the bacon a miss. And don't, whatever you do, waste the yolks, they have the calories and the goodness, throwing them away is just foolish.

lol, yes, yesterday was a rough day with the sauces (I'm guessing you looked at my diary), and it woke me up to some of the extreme sodium levels out there

    Agreed!
I won't mention the sauces thing - since you are aware - but good alternative is Mrs Dash seasonings - if you like hot and spicy chicken wings, you might like the Mrs Dash extra spicy blend...I love it!! and its 0 sodium. Great on proteins and veggies. I like it with spaghetti sauce too.

Do you really like that turkey bacon and sausage? ugh if you do go for it, and I guess its lower in fat, but its sooo loaded with sodium- you might be better off enjoying a few pieces of the real thing. I love sausage but have decided that I'll only have it once or twice a month in moderation :sigh:

On your homemade chilli and other things you are making yourself, if you chose to use canned ingredients try to find the lowest sodium content you can find...

www.lowsaltfoods.com has a great list of just about every condiment and food products you might buy telling which brand is lowest.

It's ok, honestly I purchased it without looking at the sodium content, and only once I logged it on here did I really notice. I bought two packages of it, and I don't normally have it on my list, and it won't be on there again. I'll be looking for low sodium options.

I do prefer turkey over beef/pork in most cases, I don't personally buy ground beef, steak or pork chops
