Healthy Eating Abroad

Hello, I am living abroad in Germany for the next few years and finding it challenging to eat right over here! To start with the breads, cakes, beer and schnitzel are all wonderful, but to make matters worse, my German is very basic so always being able to pick out a healthier option on a menu is a challenge in itself.
If anyone happens to know of some "lighter" traditional German dishes I could look for when I'm out that would be great, or any other advice on how to not drink every beir and eat every wurst while I am in this wonderful country!
