Does anyone know about scars and adhesions?

I have a HUGE scar on my lower abdomen, it's prolly 6 inches long or so, bout 30 yrs old... anyway last night I went to get up from the couch and I swear something ripped, oh it hurt for a few mins, then nothing.

I've lost a lot of weight in that area recently, could it have been an adhesion that ripped away from that fat?

    Hello,

I am sad to say that I know way to much about adhesions from personal experience ....I have had 4 laps to have them removed. I had emergency abdominal surgery (same incision as a c-section) in 1988 with no complications. About 2 years later, I had my first bout with adhesions...they had attached themselves to my right ovary and were strangling it. The lap is a minor belly button surgery where they go in and zap the adhesions, but this is where it gets tricky - every time they open you up, you run the risk of them creating more adhesions. Well, I struggled with this thru 3 more laps with the adhesions attaching themselves to various internal body parts and creating intense pain....last surgery was in 1995 and thankfully, have not had any issues to date. They described them to me in these laymen terms: "imagine a large barrel with a garden hose coiled inside of it from top to bottom - now take chewing gum and drip it down over the hose....how the gum would hang, stretch and intertwine with itself and the hose and become entangled is what is happening in your abdomen" The mental picture isn't too pretty, huh? Anyway, if your pain becomes unbearable definately seek emergency help....another thought is to have an internal and have your physician isolate various organs and make sure that they are not fixed (your ovaries and such) Unforntunately, an xray will not show adhesions....the only way they can really see them is to do exploratory surgery.....uuuggghhhh!!!! Keep a journal of your pain, the location and rate it on a scale of 1-10. This may be helpful for any future doctor visits or just for your own personal insight. The pain can be just like you described or can feel like you have a meat hook inside preventing you from standing up straight quickly or stretching or even just a dull ache.....hopefully, since your pain did not last too long, it was just a fluke.....good luck but always be your own best advocate if you feel something is wrong.

What a timely post. I went to my doc for a second opinion yesterday.

It's been 3.5 years since my c-section. My doc told me knot I felt in my lower abdomen was scar tissue from the c section. It didn't hurt then (Oct 2008). Suddenly in the past 6 weeks, I have been getting shooting pain through it. It's been freaking me out. I went to my GYN for a second opinion, since I figure they would KNOW c-section scar tissue. Two docs checked it out on me and both agreed it was probably scar tissue. They also told me that scar tissue can cause pain like I'm feeling. :frown:

I say this to calm your fears, but I always think having a doctor evaluate you is the best bet. :flowerforyou:

I was just about to say scar tissue.
It's common for it to "flare" up now and then.

thank you thank you. I will keep track of any pain I experience like that. Luckily it hasn't happened since, so I'm hoping it wasn't something like that. I will ask my doc to examine my organs to, thanks for the tip on that. I know no one has ever checked it in the past... so would be a good idea!!!
