Fairly active male looking for some MFP friends

I've been pretty active all of my life and this is the first time that I've counted calories. I've been doing MFP for a few weeks now and it has been an eye opener! I jump started my diet by cutting out wheat, bread, candy and processed foods (e.g. Lean Cuisine and Lean Pockets) in exchange for vegetables and lean meat. - consistently (everyday).
I've been lifting weights and playing basketball off and on for over twenty years now but I've never been able to nail down a good eating regimen, mostly out of laziness and due to inconvenience. Is there a way to spend less time in the gym (I'm fine with three to four days a week), be healthy, lose the handles, and simply look and feel good? I think I'm getting close to figuring this one out, but I could use some help with my diet.
thanks,
Ben
