Hi,

I have been working out in my running shoes and one of the instructors at the gym mentioned that you shouldn't workout in running shoes because of the angle. He said it can actually end up hurting you with some exercises that have more lateral movement (like boxing).

Anyway, I am now in the market for some training shoes and wondered if anyone had any they would recommend. I have bad ankles (in PT for them now) so I think the minimalists are out the window.

Thanks in advance.

Because of what angle? I don't understand. Why do properly fitted running shoes fit any differently than properly fitted training shoes?

running shoes have a higher heel than trainers.

You're spot on doorki. Running shoes often have too much padding for when you're doing resistance training in the gym, especially around the heel. The problem is that when weightlifting in a running shoe your foot sinks into the cushioning which will reduce your force when lifting heavy. Similarly, too much cushioning can cause you to roll your ankles inwards when doing an over head press for example which is never good!

I like Nike Free runners when in the gym as my feet are pretty neutral and I find the lack of support really activates those muscles in your feet to start working again. For running, I'm a fan of Asics Gel Nimbus.
