Where's the (organic) beef?!?

When my sister-in-law killed her cow and had it butchered we got half of it. We just ran out.

So I went to the grocery store and bought some steaks. It's HORRID. It just tastes terrible. I've been trying different stores, different butchers and it's all just terrible. Plus I'm not feeling as good as when I was eating the organic beef. We managed to get some buffalo from a friend and it helped, but still. The only place around here that sells local organic beef is an hour drive away.

Anyone else finding the lack of organic meat a problem?

Try your local natural food store or food co-op. There's a good chance they'll carry it and it will probably be in the frozen food section.

Organic doesn't matter to me as much as grass-fed/pastured/humanely raised. We buy all our meat from a local farmer. He's not certified organic but is for all intents and purposes. We buy bulk mixed packages 2-3 times a year.

This site lists some, hopefully you'll find one close to you:

Another option is to check out your local farmer's markets, if you have them. Ours has a lot of area meat farmers. You can buy a few pounds to see how you like it before buying a bigger package.

well yes, for me it is more about free ranged vs industrial farming. My first job was in the meat packing industry with an industrial meat raising, and I find it revolting. I find it unethical to treat animals like that. Happy cows make tastier steaks. So perhaps I should change the word "organic" to "free-range."

You certainly can tell the difference once you've had the good stuff. We get some local beef--not certified organic but like the pp that doesn't matter to me. I know how the cows are treated and what they eat and that's what matters to me. We mix it up with venison and wild caught fish. I still have to find a source for chicken though. We have egg-layers but my husband doesn't want to mess with butchering our own meat chickens...and I'm not really to that point yet either lol.

You can also try Trader Joes or a whole foods store.. Also search online for local farms near you..
