Sodium? Is it bad to eat to little?

Anyone in the know?

I know it's bad to eat too much, but can you eat too little? Can you be deficient in salt and what are the problems with that?

For example, I'm supposed to get 2500mg of sodium a day (according to the diary), but I've logged all my foods up until (and including) dinner and I'm only on 536.

Bah! Help?

Muchos gracias x

It is possible to be low in sodium and you need some. Someone with more knowledge will probably explain why. I asked earlier today about the sodium content in greens which I found surprising. The sodium guidelines for people with hypertension issues are lower than that set on here...1500-1600mg/day.

Low sodium diets have been shown to be worse for heart health compared to normal sodium diets.

The results of the present study show that a normal-sodium diet improves outcome, and sodium depletion has detrimental renal and neurohormonal effects with worse clinical outcome in compensated CHF (congestive heart failure) patient

    Also increases insulin resistance: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21036373
  • Aaahhhh, thankyou.
So it can be good and bad... hmm. I don't really know how to increase my sodium without eating really fatty/ salty foods, which i hate (sweet tooth, me!). Maybe I'll just stick to what I'm doing.

I checked several sites and they all said that the minimum for an adult is 500mg.
