8 glasses of water a day is a guideline only, not a rule. Problem is, a lot of people think, "If 8 glasses is good, 10 (or 20!) has got to be better!" Over-hydration can cause hyponatremia, which is, essentially, low sodium levels in the blood, causing a raft of issues, too, including death in extreme cases.
A reliable way to check whether you are properly hydrated is to use a urine colour chart like this one.

Ironically the more water you drink the less water you retain so it's a good thing. When you don't drink regularly for some reason your body holds onto the little water you have. When you start drinking more it stops panicking.

That urine color chart should really say that the first "run" of the morning doesn't matter. I know anyone with common sense should know that but common sense is not always a given.
