Sore throat when running

My legs don't get sore very quickly when running, but after about ten minutes of reasonably energetic running, I start to have a sore throat (from breathing too quickly?). Does anyone know how to ameliorate or get rid of this? Is it just a matter of being unfit that will go away as I become healthier?

  • Does it happen only in cold weather? If so, it might just be the cold air. You can cover your mouth (the whole time you run or just every once in a while) and see if that helps.

But if not, do you tend to breath in through your mouth or nose? If mouth, maybe try breathing in some through your nose. I'm sure everyone's different, but what I've heard (and what seems to work for me) is to breathe in every 3 to 4 steps - if you are trying to run at a casual, conversational pace.

But I don't think having a sore throat is a matter of not being fit enough - it sounds like a completely separate issue.

I hadn't noticed any pattern to when it does or doesn't happen, but, now that I think of it, it never happens indoors or in the summer, just when I'm running in winter. This is probably it. Thank you!

This usually happens to me when i run in a cold weather. I have a bandana that i put on and it really helps.
