It definitely sucks. :( You're right- it literally feels like I'm battling against my body. Are you on any thyroid medication? I've only just started to really try to lose weight, so I can't give you an fantastic advice. However, so far, I've just really made sure to drink lots of water & to log my food & exercise on here.
    Good luck!

Also, there is a group for people with hypothyroidism on here- just do a search. :)

I'm on synthroid, which makes my hair thin and supposedly would help me lose weight. I would feel terrible if i didn't take it but my weight is now to the point where i don't feel i can really move that well. I read somewhere that a low GI diet is supposed to help but it is really restrictive

    Hi,

Don't let hypothyroidism be your excuse. I have taken a generic form of Synthroid for many, many years. Six years ago, my doctor sent me to a dietician when my blood sugar became elevated.

    I was told these things:
    1. Write down everything you eat. It's amazing how easy it can be to say no to something if you have to write it down.
    2. Keep your total "carbs" to under 15 a day. A "carb" in her world was 15 grams of carbohydrates.....I bought a book to help me figure out how many carbs were in common foods, but basically, a slice of bread is one carb, a banana is two carbs, etc.
    3. Move....I started walking, and it is really the only exercise I do -- and I am still walking up to 100 miles a month most months.
    4. Drink plenty of water.
    5. Eat a snack in the evening....something light, like a piece of fruit or some yogurt.
    6. Eat breakfast every day.

Now, you will get those who say it doesn't matter what time you eat or if you eat breakfast or not or if you count carbs. I'm telling you that this is what worked for me. I lost 60+ pounds, and have kept over 50 of it off for over five years. I am now trying to lose about 10, and in all honesty at my lowest weight, I was probably too light.

I say this, because all of my weight loss occurred well after my diagnosis with hypothyroidism. It can take longer, and it is harder, but it can be done.

See a dietician if you can. It was one of the best things I did.....that and buying a used treadmill -- best $200 I've ever spent!
