Universal ABC Beauty Supply International Issues Recall After FDA Finds Undeclared Drug in Company's Weight Loss Pills

April 22, 2009 -- Universal ABC Beauty Supply International Inc. of Brooklyn, N.Y., is recalling 34 weight loss products because FDA tests show they contain sibutramine, the active ingredient in the appetite suppressant Meridia.

Meridia, which is FDA approved, isn't being recalled.

The recalled weight loss products aren't FDA approved and their labels don't note that they contain sibutramine.

"FDA advises that these products may pose a threat to consumers because sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke," states a news release from Universal ABC Beauty Supply International.

Here is the list of products that are being recalled:

2. 3 DAYS fit, 60 capsules, bottle in box
3. EIGHT FACTOR DIET, 60 capsules, 3 pouches/box
4. 24hours Diet, 60 capsules

Universal ABC Beauty Supply International states that it's discontinuing the recalled products and hasn't received any reports of illness or injury linked to those products.

If you have any of the recalled products, don't use them. Return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or a partial refund of the unused pills.

Universal ABC Beauty Supply International advises consumers with questions to call Sandra Tan at 718-891-6888, Monday through Friday between noon and 6 p.m. Eastern time.

Not surprised at all, it's only a matter of time until slimquick and alli get pulled too! :drinker:

The only bad thing is there are twice as many products waiting for shelf space...gimmicks...all of it

As a side note-
It's kind of scary that they wouldn't claim sibutramine in listed ingredients. Sibutramine is neurotransmitter that acts as a serotonin and norepinephrine inhibitor, and it should NOT be taken with any MAOI inhibitors (ie: depression and anxiety medication). :noway:

If you look back through the history of diet pills the FDA has a long running bad decision tally. Most notable was Phen fen, a lot of the women (and men) that took it had heart problems caused by the pills.

It was once said on MFP and I agree that you are a guinea pig with any pill that has been approved and has NOT been in use for at least 10 years. You are unwittingly part of the trial of that drug and the risk almost always outweighs the reward.

Just because the FDA has given their stamp of approval doesn't mean we should be so willing to shove it into our gullets! :noway:

EXACTLY---
I had a girl on a MAO who took Slim quick pills and darn near died---she was in ICU for 3 days with heart failure and pulmonary edema. (She didn't call to check--thought they were safe if over the counter)

I get patients who ask me all the time about diet pills----I tell them about this site and tell them I know the side effects of these meds and I will not use them---as tempting as they sound---I have 3 kids I 'd kinda like to be around to see!
