It actually takes the Earth a little longer than a year to travel around the Sun — 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds, to be exact.
That is the reason for Leap Year.

    Thirty days hath September,
    April, June and November;
    All the rest have thirty-one
    Save February, she alone
    Hath eight days and a score
    Til leap year gives her one day more.

    According to different women I have met on the last two leap days, I am actually a ghost of the world's youngest billionaire who was murdered in mysterious circumstances on leap day and only is able to materialize on the day of my murder to try to solve the crime.

    That said, I've chosen to spend the day with them and assume they will wait restlessly for my purported return in four years.

    P.S., I never call back.

    According to an old Irish legend, or possibly history, St Bridget struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men – and not just the other way around – every 4 years. This is believed to have been introduced to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar.

    In some places, Leap Day has been known as “Bachelors’ Day” for the same reason. A man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage proposal from a woman on Leap Day. In many European countries, especially in the upper classes of society, tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman's proposal on February 29 has to buy her 12 pairs of gloves. The intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring. During the middle ages there were laws governing this tradition.

    Every, what, four years? But not in years that end in 00 ... unless those years can be evenly divided by four. So 2100 is good to go.

    Yeah I do. I joined a group to walk/run 100 miles in the month of Feb. Thank GOD I have one more day to finish. 6 miles to go! :)
  • Earth's cycles of seasons is 365.242 days long. Without leap years to keep pace, the dates of our 365-day calendar would quickly move outta sync with the seasons. : ))

    I think "quickly" is relative. Because relative to a person, it doesn't really matter.

    Eventually Fourth of July would be in the dead of winter.

    This would make my "Christmas in July" party redundant.
