Losing my grip

I've been doing The New Rules of Lifting For Women for 5 weeks now. I'm feeling like I could lift heavier weights but my hands can't take it. For instance when doing lunges, my hands can only manage to hold out using 30 pound weights, same with step ups. I know my body can handle more than that, but I'm feeling like I'm going to drop the weights at the end of each set because my grip isn't strong enough. Anyone else experience this? Have you found that slowly your grip has improved so you can move to heavier weights? Any suggestions?

Hi hun. Do you wear training gloves? This helped me a lot, also remove any rings from your fingers. I also went on to use a barbell for the stepups when the dumbbells got too heavy.
  • Yes this is a massive problem for me with deadlifting. My back can easily take it but the weight just wants to slip out. Ive been doing various forearem training such as:

Hanging for as long as you can off a pullup bar - ideally towards ends of your fingers
Holding two weight plates together with one hand so that you have to squeeze to hold them up

This is the best way to proceed as opposed to other options such as using gloves but it may take a little while.

Maybe consider using gloves and also carrying out the above training until its not a problem.

    Hope this Helps.

You'll need to incorperate some grip training, being careful not to have it affect your pull days.

Climbing/weightlifting chalk will help when you need.

Resorting to gloves or straps goes against the ideal of being stronger for practical purposes. Being able to lift more than you can hold onto is a little pointless.

Thanks for the advise. I do use gloves, but I'm going to try some of those strengthening moves and using the bar for step ups. They seem to be the hardest on the grip.
