Complex Carbs Dilemma - Help!

Hi,
I'm huge on having a balanced diet, nothing too extreme. As I've been working out, I know that eating more whole grains and complex carbs (whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta) are helpful. I have up'd my protein intake with a protein shake.
Here's my challenge - when I eat bread on its own (toast) or as part of a sandwich etc., I get sooooo sleepy. It feels almost like a I've taken a sleeping pill! I buy the Ezekial breads and Barilla Pasta Plus,, but it seems to happen most times.:grumble:
Has this happened to anyone? What worked for you? I know not to ask for 'nutrition' advice, but if anyone can relate to what I'm sharing and can offer some alternatives to getting the complex carbs in, I'd be grateful.

Have you ever been tested for Diabetes?.........0

this doesn't sound normal to me, you should talk to your doctor just to make sure there is not something else going on.0

bread and pasta does the same thing to me! now that i have stopped eating them and also cut out sugar ( i only eat one piece of fruit/day) I AM FINALLY LOSING WEIGHT!
i eat organic plain oatmeal for breakfast with flax oil, cinnamon, and half a cup of fruit. (don't eat the processed packaged stuff - it is loaded with sugar and other toxins)
i eat organic brown rice for lunch with protein and veggies and then protein and veggies for dinner.
i snack on plain almonds, plain yogurt, and veggies with homemade dips like tahini and hummus
that should be all you need for carbs for your day, hope that helps!0 -
i dont eat bread or pastas going on 2 weeks now.
i eat sweet potatoes, brown rice, and original oatmeal- with lean meat or egg whites0 -
Thanks to all who posted...I see my doc pretty regulary and I don't have diabetes; all of my blood tests and stuff are within normal ranges. But thanks for the suggestion to get checked
To the 2 posters who shared about the oatmeal, brown rice, hummus....thank you!:flowerforyou:
