I have a Garmin 610, and was looking through the breakdown analysis of each lap (1km) I ran this morning, and noticed the calorie count for the first 2 km was only 9 cals each. Subsequent kilometres were all between 47 and 60 cals per km. SO I scrolled back and looked at previous runs, and on all of the the cal burn for my first km (usually only the first one, not two) is always 10 cals.
Does anyone know why this is? It isn't possible that I genuinely only burn 10 cals in a 5 min km, as later laps show I burn around 50, so why is the first always that low?

I am no expert, but have a theory. The first lap or two are only listing that small of a burn as your heart rate though it has gone up, it wasn't a sustained rate. The longer time that it is elevated, the more burn would take place. Just my take, anyone else have ideas?0

because the HRM is using your Heart rate to estimate intensity and it may take a lap or so to get your HR high enough for the HRM to think you are working hard. This is another issue with HRMs as a high HR does not equate to high calorie burns the HRM uses HR to estimtate intensity, it is intensity that will burn cals as the more intense you train the greater your oxygen uptake. That being said most likely the first part is under estimated and the rest would be slightly overestimated, which is why HRM's use average HR for the entire workout to give you a better estimate of total cals burned. Looking at sections you will see ups and downs, even if the actual caloric burn would be the same.0
