The Upside of Dietary Fat

Here's a concept for you: dietary fat is a NUTRIENT. That's right, it's not the enemy, but rather, something your body needs for optimal health. Here are some of the good things dietary fat does for you:

Helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins (e.g., vitamins A and D)
Prevents heat loss
Protects the organs from trauma
Provides a source of fuel for the body

Of course, there are choices you can make to ensure your body is getting the best kinds and the right amounts of dietary fat. Unsaturated fat (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids) are more healthful than saturated and hydrogenated fats. The American Heart Association recommends that fat intake be 30% calories of total calories and that saturated fats account for 10% or less of total calories.

Glad you posted.....so many fear fat as the enemy and like you said it is a nutrient. Avacadoes and nuts are great stores of dietary fat. I even drink whole milk and still lose weight. Also when things are low-fat, they usually "inject" it with more carbs. Then you don't feel full as you do if you had the regular version of something.
People need to be educated more on what the body needs. Stay on the outer rim of the grocery store and you'll never go wrong. Hit the aisles with all the processed foods and beware! My food plan consists of 30% fat, 30% protein and 40% carbs with no refined sugar/starch. I have never been more full on a food plan like that!

I am trying to do my part and change people's mind set. I used to be the same way!!!

I found out I have diabetes and PCOS and my Endocrinologist and Gynecologist told me to go on a low carb diet - and do it BY THE BOOK!!! make the lifestyle changes, etc.......

I didn't listen until this year.

I re-read the Atkins book and cleaned out all the processed stuff once again and started on an all natural journey. I try to buy organic veggies, at least for the dirty dozen they call it...........

My ratios are about as follows:

    Protein: 35%
    Fats: 55%
    Carbs: 10%

Following this puts my blood sugar on an even keel and I am able to lose weight, have lots of energy and feel GREAT!!!!

I eat a lot of veggies and a few fruits. Healthy fats such as avocado and raw nuts. I eat way more calories than I ever have and am able to lose weight this way.

I even bought a meat grinder so I can make my own sausage!!! Dr Atkins said in his book that the more processed a food is, the more hidden sugars and other chemicals are in the food.
