Training for the 1/2 marathon hit a little snag yesterday. Went to the doctor for a checkup and they found a heart murmur...which lead to and EKG, a stress test, and an Echo Cardiogram. So I have Mitral Valve Regurgitation and I have to see a cardiologist. The doctor told me I should stop running until we figure out what's going on. So, I feel fine...my BP is normal, resting heart rate is low, I can run 6 miles (probably more) with no problem, but my stupid Mitral valve won't close properly...GREAT!

Listen to your doctor and if they give you the green light to run this race - GREAT - if not, there will always be another race.
    Take care of you first....

I'm definitely listening to the doctor. It just bums me out.

my brother had open heart surgery at the age of 25 to replace his valve. two years later, he is doing great. i can understand how disappointing it is to get news like that.

did the doctor tell you that you can't walk for exercise (my brother couldn't do ANYthing)? i know you want to run, but walking a half is a huge accomplishment too. i had abdominal surgery in april last year and my first half was in june, so my (running) training was halted. i walked it and had a really great experience. i ran my first half in october instead. :)

*fingers crossed* you receive good news from the doc.

I wish you the best of luck; I have been told several times over the past few years to stop running and rest an injury, albeit for nothing as serious as this.. and it SUCKS. I am stubborn and younger me would not listen to the doc and run anyway. However now I like to think I am wiser, but sometimes that "don't run for a while" feels like a death sentence.

Good luck! I know you'll be back out there soon when it's all cleared up.

Thanks everybody. It's still just tough to wrap my brain around this.

That really stinks, especially when you think you are feeling ok and just want to RUN! Hope you get good news and you can get back to it soon.
