I'd like to get something in the $20-$30 range that is accurate. It doesn't have to have all sorts of fancy stuff on it... just need to know how many calories I am actually burning while working out.

I don't know about $30 but I will HIGHLY recommend my HRM. It's the Timex T5G971. It has everything you need. Peak, Average, and calorie count. It's about $40 on amazon.
I love it. And this little watch was rated as one of the most accurate HRM on Consumer Reports. There is a review online of a guy that compares it to his fancy Polar and it comes pretty close.0 -
I would like to know this too. I need one and have been reading about the FitBit but want something that is accurate.0

Me too! That Timex one could work for me (Its cheaper than Polar) but I then again, I want one that could tell you the distance you went (I'm training for a half marathon and it helps me to know what distance I am at).0
