  • Ya can't spot reduce! No ab exercise will reduce your stomach size. Abs are made in the kitchen.

I posed a similar question and I understand that abs are made in the kitchen. I do a boat load of sit ups. My stomach is flat but I lack the definition that I am going for. If abs are made in the kitchen, what do I need to do to get that layer of fat off? I am at goal weight. I just need the fat layer to come off now. I eat salads for lunch (whole wheat pasta on occasion). I will open my diary if anyone wants to look at it and give me feedback. I work out every day (cardio, strength) so I am clearly messing up somewhere and I believe it is in the kitchen. I am set at 1200 calories and I don't eat my exercise calories. I log everything and I sometimes find it hard to meet the 1200.

Reverse resisted crunches as part of a complete workout program. You can also try isometric training with a Pilates ball to strengthen your core overall.

Zumba or running. Zumba is more fun, but either will do it for me.

I would disagree that ab exercises will not reduce your stomach size (assuming you mean fat around your midsection and not your actual stomach). Any exercise can recude you stomach size because they all burn calories, and that would include ab exercises.

I hear "abs are made in the kitchen" all the time and I completely believe it. But what exactly does it mean specifically? Is it just staying within your calorie allotment and eating lots of fruit, veggies, and protein? Or is there more to it like avoiding specific foods?

It means that visible ab muscles are a result of having a low bodyfat percentage

This. Exactly. I haven't done an "ab move" in months.

If you are at goal weight, why are you still eating at 1200? Sounds like you are wanting to get rid of your body's last fat storage. Your body won't do this under such and extreme calorie deficit. Small calorie deficit. HEAVY weight training and even then, where we store fat is genetic. If your body's last place is your belly you might have to cut to pretty low body fat levels to get stomach definition. Only you can decide if it's worth that.

This. Abs are revealed through body fat loss, which is accomplished through calorie deficit.

Yeppers... EVERYONE has ab muscles.. its only when your bodyfat becomes low enough that they are visible. No amount of exercise will lose weight if your diet isnt in line.... but even zero exercise will lose weight if diet is in line... thats why abs are truly made in the kitchen.

I havent done an ab workout, ever.
but years of riding sportbikes did give me strong core muscles.... and for as long as I can remember, I can do situps until I get bored.
No, i dont have visible abs (yet) but... i can hold a 45lb plate behind my head and do full situps....

that said, I dont do anything specific for abs. They do get worked from squats/deadlifts/overhead press... basically any lift done while standing... and from riding.

However. If you want to work your core there are some great ways to do that. Maybe it wont get that fat off, but you can slim your waist line by doing standing abs and twisting movements.
Tiffany Rothe has some great workouts on you tube.
Although I have the same amount of fat on my stomach I always feel smaller and look better after doing a core workout like Insane abs or 6 week 6 pack. Those workouts burn calories and focus on the abs.

Ballroom dancing. Seriously, go learn how to cha-cha or Bolero with proper Latin hip action. Heck, go learn how to dance with a partner using proper rotation around your spine with any dance, and you will never worry about those muscles becoming lax ever again.
