Long term effect of eating too few calories?

Hi, I'm trying to figure this concept out. I've had some people tell me that if I don't eat enough calories, and keep it down to a minimum that as I get older (I'm 18) I'm setting myself up for not being able to eat more then a certain amount of calories without my body racing to put weight on me. Is this true? I usually eat around 1700-2300 calories a day but I exercise at least 700-1,000 of them off depending on what day of the week it is - if I'm working out that day or not-. I'm definitly not trying to lose any weight, in fact I think I need to put a few pounds on. I'm 5'11 and weigh around 158-160...Thank you!

If you don't eat a healthy amount of calories you're body will think you're starving and as a survival thing will hold on to everything you put into it. Also, when you get older, your metabolism naturally slows down and the body hold onto more fat. I think that's what you're asking about.0
