Treats versus giving into cravings?

On one hand, I've heard that you should let yourself eat what you want (in moderation) and not restricting so as to prevent binging later on. Then again, when are you just giving into cravings? This sound stupid, but it crosses my mind that I have to eat that chocolate (for example) now even though I don't want to, because I'm afraid I will binge on it later.
Thanks for your thoughts!

If I allow myself to have a little bit of something, I am less likely to over indulge later. When I am restricting myself to severely is when I find myself eating a whole box of cookies because I have said eff it!0
