Those drinks are expensive, have a protein shake or eat some protein and drink a lot of water
  • as weird as it sounds, I drink nothing but water, i hate drinking sweet stuff, ever since I was a kid.. I eat lots of chicken everyday and eat protein bars... im really interested in recovery drinks..

I don't usually use a "recovery drink" per se, but I do indulge in chocolate milk + protein powder if I'm feeling shaky after a long bike ride. Well, that or a beer. :)
  • I've heard chocolate milk is really good... but I dont think I could have it in my home without drinking the whole thing the same day... so its better to leave it at the store and none in my home.. and beer.. yuck!

Here's the new study in it's entirety that hints that chocolate milk might be the best of them...

Ha ha! I hear ya! I have foods like that, too, that I simply cannot keep around or I will eat them.

One thought - if you want to try chocolate milk, you could try just buying a bottle (like the individual size - 16 oz or so, I think) right before you exercise (assuming you drive somewhere, like to the gym or to run or cycle).

Something else that I like sometimes are the individual size smoothies, like Odwalla or Bolthouse Farms (I think that's what it's called). They have different flavors like chocolate, fruit, or vanilla and are typically filled with soy milk for protein. Also, if there's a Starbucks nearby, the frappucinos (lowfat) are awesome in the heat. Jamba Juice has a great protein smoothie that's low in fat (chocolate or chocolate peanut butter). Basically any smoothie with protein is gonna be great. As you can tell, I'm a little lazy and usually don't go to the trouble of making my own (crazy because they are super easy to make), so I end up just buying a few individual sized portions or going to starbucks or jamba juice or wherever a smoothie is sold.

Another thought - and this is something new to me, so I haven't looked into whether it's good for recovery or not - have you tried a chia seed drink? Sounds weird, but I have heard they really help with recovery. They are minimally sweet and refreshing, and I think chia seeds have protein. I just tried a chia seed drink and it looked weird, but it was really tasty. You can actually buy chia seeds and make your own, too, by rehydrating the seeds and then adding them to your juice or tea of choice.
