Question about rowing machines for the Crossfit crowd

Just a question for those who are into Crossfit.
Crossfit likes to make such a big issue out of the fact that they don't use machines like traditional gyms -- yet many Crossfit facilities use rowing machines.
Why do they have this double standard? A rowing machine IS by definition a machine. So why does one type of exercise machine get the Crossfit seal of approval when all other exercise machiens are frowned upon?
