I'm leaving wednesday for a vacation in orlando. I don't fly often, it's been over a year. Anybody have any good suggestions for snacks? Can I even take snacks into the airport? I don't want to have to rely on overpriced airport convenience food. Thanks!

You can take snacks, just not water bottles. You have to buy an overpriced bottle of water once you get through security.

Last time I traveled I took sliced apples, prepacked cheese, like a cheese stick or Baby Bell cheese, a small bag of walnuts and/or almonds with some chocolate chips thrown in - stuff like that. A little sweet, a little protein, a little fruit.

anything that is sealed in packaging definitely won't be a problem. Just the liquids you gotta watch out for. If you are worried about it there are usually stores after security
  • Difficult for me to give definite suggestions for foods, however I can give you some things to think about when you make your decisions.

    Easy open
Whatever wrapping is left should be something you're willing to put back into your carry on in case the flight attendants don't get to you to pick up the trash (messy wrappers will make a mess of your things, keep that in mind)
Snacks that are too salty will cause you to be thirsty and you can not bring a filled water bottle (or any other drink) through TSA
If you bring items that needs a spoon or fork, be sure you bring one
    Bring extra napkins
Items that don't need to be refrigerated are best, especially in case of flight delays

As for what can be brought through TSA security, there is a pretty simple rule, any liquids or gels over 3oz are not permitted. This includes yogurts, applesauce, fruit in water or syrup (the liquid portion needs to be limited). To avoid buying water at the airport, bring an empty water bottle and fill it from a drinking fountain. Be prepared to remove any liquid or gel items from your carryon and place in a bin to go through the TSA luggage xray machine. This is best done by putting them in a zip lock bag and removing the entire zip lock from the luggage and placing in a bin with your other items. You will be limited in the quantity of of liquids and gels you can bring through, even if each one is under 3 oz. In general the rule is whatever can be placed together in a QUART size zip lock, can be brought through. It may be an advantage if you buy toothpaste, shampoo, etc at your desitination rather than bringing them from home (at least if you want to bring snacks that fall in the liquid/gel category).

I work in an airport, and have to go through TSA multiple times a day sometimes, so it pays to be prepared. You can find more information at www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/index.shtm

    Have fun on your trip.

The last couple of times I've flown, I brought an empty Nalgene bottle to fill once past security ;D They didn't mind.

I fly a lot and I take kale chips, carrots, green pepper slices, homemade beef jerky, nuts and fruit leather. Plus, if I am forced to eat in the airport, I try to find a Starbucks. Most have this nice little hummus trays that include one pita, chicken and veggies.

For such a long flight I'd make sandwiches, pack fruit, nuts, granola, basically anything you'd normally snack on that's not liquid. Avoid anything stinky like tuna or hard boiled eggs unless you want to draw attention on the flight. You can bring the oatmeal and soup cups that you add water to--just ask the flight attendant for hot water.

You can carry an empty Bobble Bottle (bottle with a water filter) through and fill up from the water fountain. I usually bring the protein bars and some nuts. These will tide me over for the flights.

Something you might not think about... I have been on flights that were announced as nut free due to an allergy. All passengers were asked not to eat any products that contained nuts on that flight. Now, this has only happened once to me, but I do know others that is has happened to so it was not a one time thing. As such, JUST to be safe, I would pick something that does not have nuts in it. Usually they won't say anything until you are already on the plane and thus have no chance to get another snack... but that is another issue all together.
