I am thinking about getting myself a treadmill, I have been on one a few times a year ago, but I don't know what I should look for, what should I know?

Hi there
If it's an option, I would rent a treadmill first and see if you like it and use it. We tried this and ended up returning it after three months - it just wasn't our thing. Now, we dance to our favourite songs for cardio instead.
There are a few technical details I'd suggest checking. The first is the maximum weight the model can take (some only take up to 100kg, while others take around 150kg). Also, some have a better motor or more program choices than others. Then, treadmills are big, so do you need one that you can fold away or do you have enough space for a bigger model?
Hope it works for you.0 -
Go and run/walk outside! It will save you money and be far less boring than running on the spot! :flowerforyou:0

Great idea. I bought a treadmill a few years ago - and it got a lot of use - but started running outdoors all year 'round a couple of years ago, far more enjoyable. My treadmill still gets used on days when there's freezing rain but otherwise I'm outside.0 -
I find a treadmill is a great thing to have if you are in a cold area or do not like bwing out in rain or snow.
When we bought our first we were afraid we would not use it much so we bought an inexpensive one. We also bought a small TV and placed it in from of the treadmill. The TV was the key to the treamill being used.0 -
I work at all sorts of hours, often not getting home before dark, and I don't live in an area I would feel safe walking outside at dark. I am not a morning person so going before work is not an option. I am not really into running, a jog would be the most I would do. I wouldnt need a weight limit more than 200 lbs, I would be trying to spend less than $500. Anything I should keep an eye out for when shopping?0

I needed a good because I was well over 300 hundred, but you can get a treadmil at sears for under $500 that will suit your purpose. The treadmil is very boring but very effective. Good Luck0

I have a treadmill. Honestly it was the one that was on sale and it works just fine. I use it daily and have for a couple years. Treadmills are nice because you don't have to get out in the cold, in the heat, in the rain, in the dark and you and/or your husband don't need to worry about attackers.
I also like it because I know exactly how fast and far I've gone. The investment in a treadmill is far less than a gym membership so it can be very worthwhile if you use it a lot.
On the downside, you have to get creative about using it. I do different speeds and patterns. It may also help to place it in front of a TV so you can watch a show, which helps pass the time - but you do have to have the volume up sort of loud. An MP3 player is also an option to keep your workout more interesting.
To be fair, when mine gives out, I do want to get an elliptical machine, because it's a total body workout and you may want to consider looking at them as well.0 -
I love my treadmill, I got it at costco about 5 years ago and it's going to be time for a new one soon. I love having a built in fan and the wider the belt you walk on the better....my physical therapist told me that unless you have the feature where you can enter your weight into the machine it assumes everyone weighs 150 and calculates calories burned using that number (just what i heard) so my next one will have that feature. Good luck and happy shopping0

i use my treadmill at least 4 times a week, i have a proform interactive..got it off craigslist for $250, it retails approx $800. it has a built in cd player w/speakers, the cooling fan, and it folds up if i need to. i have it set up in my b/room where i can see the tv (i put on subtitles and watch it that way as opposed to turning up the volume). there are several programs on the treadmill but i prefer to do my own interval running on it...for me its the best way to run as running on concrete really messes with my left knee, and my treadmill has really good shocks on it to cushion the impact a bit.0

mine came yesterday.
I love it ~big smile~
I wanted a treadmill cuz I don't want weather or time considerations to hinder my daily exercise.
Every gift you get is what you make of it.
I got mine through Amazon.com...It wasn't expensive and it works for me. Oh, and I dance to my favorites songs too...and run around in circles when one of my MFP friends completes an exercise goal..0 -
I use my treadmill every day in the winter. In the summer and nice weather I jog outside. I wouldn't give up my treadmill for anything, mostly cause I can get on it at any time I please which means I don't have to get dressed to go to the gym at like 1am. I can do cardio or just plain walking. It's a pretty basic model but has incline on it for uphill walking or running, and can go up to like 8.0mph. It keeps track of time, distance (and calories burned but that isn't really accurate) I looked for one with a good motor on it because I knew i'd be putting it to good use. It's got a wide enough track on it to fit an averaged sized person. It's got handrails on the side which come in handy. It also folds up for when I need to tuck it away (with 2 wheels, so I can ROLL it away). Oh, and it also has a water bottle holder and book/laptop holder on it for days when I find it hard to stay focused on my exercise. Hope this helps0

Ours is a Proform that was on sale for 499 about 6 months ago. It is not internet enabled - it has a number of in built programs. But I usually just set a speed and incline manually.0
