When I realized I had changed

I'm not sure this is a success story in the traditional sense, but I feel it counts.

My work takes me to businesses which have multiple buildings, separated by a distance, which I need to travel between on a frequent basis. Normally, I will hop in my car and drive from one to the other and not even think twice about it. Even on the nicest of days, I instinctively grab for my car keys and head to the parking lot, even when my car is about half the distance as my destination.

Back in January, when I started getting myself into shape, I began making it a point to walk everywhere. I would walk between buildings but I remember having to make an effort to NOT get into my car.

A couple of weeks ago, I had to stop and do some work in a building other than the one with my office, so I drove into work and did what I had to do. As I was getting ready to leave and started walking out to the other building, I remembered I had my car and I was genuinely disappointed.

It was at that moment that I realized I had changed. I was disappointed that I couldn't walk and that I HAD to drive. I knew at that time I was progressing in my quest for a healthier lifestyle. That was my ultimate turning point.

Does anyone else have a single time when they KNEW they were on the right path?

  • That's a great one! It's amazing how habits change. My change has been more about foods I'm craving. I remember getting excited that there was asparagus on the salad bar in the cafeteria one day. I filled up two-thirds of my take out container with it.

i'm not sure if this is a good thing, but for me it's the ability not think "fu** it i already messed up might as well just eat". for example. yesterday i had a huge lunch. i mean mega super huge. i totally ate more than enough for the day. usually for me that meant i would just eat dinner even if i wan't hungry. now, i think about it and just hold off if i know i'm not hungry. and if i am hungry i will eat healthy instead of junk food and stuff.....
