Starting a dairy free diet today mostly because my 23 month old is allergic so I want to learn to cook better without it and this will force me to do it. Anyone have any good recipe ideas?

Are you looking to eliminate all dairy in the diet or just eliminate dairy products (ie. milk, cheese, yogourt, etc)? I ask because peanut butter and cold cuts have some traces of dairy and when I did a dairy free cleanse I could not have any.

Fruit is a great dairy free snack, sliced grapes, strawberries, bananas, blueberries, raspberries...mmm. As for meals you could do hummus with lettuce, shredded carrot, and a meat of your choice in a wrap as an alternative to sandwiches. I use almond milk as a dairy alternative as the flavour is better, I do not suggest the unsweetened variety for a kid as the taste may be off putting.

    Other meal options:

    - stir fry with brown or white rice or rice noodles (rice noodles are super easy and quick to cook and absorb flavours like crazy)
    - veggies with hummus dip
    - salad: a shredded carrot with raisins and a vinaigrette is good, fruit salad or traditional lettuce/celery/cucumber/tomato salad with a vinaigrette with no dairy in it.
    - Steak or chicken or and potatoes (use a chicken or beef broth as that liquid instead of dairy if you are doing mashed) with some veggies is always good.
    - roasted cauliflower or roasted potatoes with chicken fingers

If you are not already using it check out Pinterest there are some great recipes, etc there. Also, Allrecipes.com is a good source.

Eating dairy free is not boring its just different.

I suggest soy milk or almond milk - I usually switch back and forth between the two. I love using it in smoothies with bananas, spinach or kale, and some fresh or frozen fruit. You can also add your favorite protein, especially if you're using it as a recovery drink after a workout. It's how I begin each day and stay satiated after workouts.

I'd check out these sites for dairy free foods - tons of recipes - and they all are vegetarian or vegan, so you can incorporate more veggie meals into your diet:

    http://www.choosingraw.com/
    http://veganbelle.com/

Oh and here's the search result page for dairy free on Babble.com/Food:

After checking out Vegan Belle in particular, I found a dairy free pudding from Soyummi Foods, which you might want to check out as well. They have the only rice and tapioca puddings that I've ever seen that are dairy free, which was nostalgic for me and my wife. And kids love them, too.

    You could also check out:

daiya cheese - dairy free, cheese alternative that actually melts
natural peanut butters - they definitely have ones that are only nut based, so safe for dairy allergic people
earth balance - they have a dairy free butter alternative that's even free of whey (in most other margarines) as well as dairy free shortening, and peanut butter
coconut bliss - great, coconut milk based ice cream that doesn't have a may contain dairy warning

You can also make dairy-free cream cheese and sour cream with tofu or soy milk. Just search the web for recipes on these.

    Hope this helps!

I've been making my popcorn on the stove instead of the air popper recently and loving it! I melt 1TBS Coconut oil in a 5qt pot with a lid, dump in that about 1/2 to 1tsp Simply Organic all purpose seasoning then 1/3c kernels and pop away! It's sooooo good! Herbs de province is another goody to use as is fajita seasoning! You can make your own up as well. The reason I quit the air popper is I like the way the seasonings stick to the kernels once popped and Coconut oil is a very healthy fat.

We are dairy free for the most part - hubby, oldest daughter and myself eat cheese/yogurt.

But for baking and cooking we just use rice milk or water in place of the milk. It won't for everything,we'll never make a cheese cake or alfredo sauce everyone can eat, but it's easy for the most part.

Lots of vegan butters taste great and will go fine on your popcorn. :) I don't know if you have Giant Eagles near you, but the Giant Eagle brand of bagged popcorn is amazing--sunflower oil and salt. I usually can't buy it because I can't do portion control with it.

I use So Delicious coconut milk or their coconut creamer in most anything calling for milk, works really well cause the fat content is similar and the taste is not of coconut at all of course. Comes in a few flavors and fat levels. I've tried them all and coconut was the only one I like. You also get excellent healthy fats.
