GREEN TEA??

I'm trying to lay off the coffee a bit (drink way too much of it and want to prevent teeth staining). I'm thinking about switching to green tea to quench my thirst for a hot beverage in the morning. My question is about the myth that I've heard that green tea is 1) actually good for you and 2) that is aids in weight loss. Does anyone have any factual info on green tea? Thanks!

bump for myself - I was just about to write a post like that!0

I love cold green tea, but it has so much sugar..and I tried once hot green tea and it tasted awfully! So I stick with coffee, which I drink without sugar0

I love green tea, actually I started drinking it when I gave up coffee. It is actually good for you, as far as helping with weight loss I'm not sure but it's very tasty...0

You can get diet green too.0

I have cut way back on coffee but, I still have to have my black coffee in the morning. I do however drink hot green tea in the afternoon. I enjoy it. They say it is good for you but, I do not think it helps with weight lose. I do however think it's a healhier alternative.0

I only like my green tea cold. I like Chai Tea with some Vanilla Soy or Almond Milk, and a bit of cinnamon. Really good !0

Are we all talking about the same thing here? I have some green tea bags in my office, I have one once a day, maybe in the afternoon. It has zero calories (no milk or sugar)
What are these high sugar or diet varieties of which you speak?0 -
Green tea is really good for you according to many, many studies, although there haven't been a lot of what they call "real world" studies to back it up. Green tea has a lot of antioxidants that are more potent because there is little to no processing of the leaves. As far as weight loss, it HAS been linked to decreasing obesity, and it also lowers bad cholesterol. The bottom line is that, when compared to a drink like coffee (especially coffee with sugar and/or creamer), green tea is probably going to be a much better option. There are health benefits to coffee, too, of course, but not as many.
I drink green or white tea almost every day. I get it from a local coffee shop/health store that sells fresh, organic leaves by the ounce. I'm Southern, so we like our tea iced around here. I like green tea hot, though. I don't put any sugar or honey in it, because I really like the way it tastes. (It does NOT taste like the canned/bottled kind that Lipton makes -- so don't be surprised if that's your only experience with green tea.) I do sometimes squeeze an orange slice in it to sweeten it up naturally.
Here's a link from WebMD about health benefits, by the way: http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/health-benefits-of-green-tea0 -

I think they are talking about the lipton bottles that are in stores. Those have sugar I believe...they arent the tea bags you have.0 -
I think the people referring to sweet or "diet" versions of green tea are thinking of the bottled kind. Fresh, natural green tea isn't sweet and there's no need to make it "diet" because... well, there's no fat or calories to cut from it.0

Yes. I'm talking about the bottled kind, not the tea bags. I actually use Tazo Green Tea Keurig K-cups and just use one splenda when I make mine. Yummy.0 -

^^this exactly ... i can't replace my morning coffee, but my afternoon cup is now green tea.0 -
Green tea is the worst thing for teeth staining! I brush, floss and mouthwash twice a day and still have problems from green tea, had to cut down to one a day!
If you don't have the bottled stuff it's good for you though, it's full of anti oxidants which are good for your skin and obviously zero calories!0 -
most all teas have great natural properties that aid in digestion and regularity, etc. the proof is in the poop, haha. sorry but drinking tea makes mes very regular.
I don't add anything to my tea. I drink black, green, ginger, orange, jasmine, peach, and all kinds of blends, love the stuff
btw, coffee isn't bad, if you drink a bunch and add tons of sugar, that's the bad part0 -
i love green, black, white ... any kind of tea!! i drink it hot and cold. but like someone else mentioned ... i use tea bags and brew my own. the store bought, pre-made teas do contain a lot of sugars and DIET tea is disgusting to me. if you make it at home you control what is in it. there are many health benefits to tea drinking and it also adds to that 8 glasses of water you should be getting daily.0

I drink stash green/white fusion tea...I drink about 3 big mug fulls a day...trying to cut back on my coffee as well. Haven't noticed it helping with weight loss though. I just like it.0

I put 2 bags of green tea in my 32 oz water bottle with cold water. Let it sit for a while and then drink it throughout the day. I dont do sweet in my teas so its pretty yummy.
Dont know how good it is for you but I get really bored with plain water sometimes.0 -

Whatever you do, DON'T drink bottled green tea beverages thinking that they will give you the health benefits/weight loss aide that real (brewed) green tea does. Those things are full of sugars and most likely contain very little actual green tea!
I'm also not too fond of regular brewed green tea, but have found some really good alternatives. Yogi makes some delicious green tea blends that taste so good - no sweetener needed! Try the Blueberry Slim Life or the Pomegranate flavor - so delicious and a great alternative to coffee!0 -
Green tea and coffee both share many of the same health benefits, between their antioxidants and caffeine. As for any other health benefits of green tea, there hasn't been anything conclusive about it. It's healthy, but I wouldn't put it above coffee for health reasons (speaking of using both black, not adding anything to them.)
Green tea has been possibly linked to lower cholesterol, better weight loss, and decreased risk of some cancers. Coffee is linked to lower risks of Diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, certain cancers, dementia, stroke, and heart arrhythmia.
Personally, I wouldn't skip either of them, I drink a few cups of coffee and a few cups of green tea every day.0 -
I was just thinking about making a post and asking what people thought of Green Tea.
I know there is green tea you make with tea bags and there are bottles one in the grocery store. What I am wondering is....Are the bottled ones in the grocery store just as healthy as making it yourself. We are getting ready to begoing alot on the weekends and we take a drink cooler with us. I am thinking about putting some bottle green tea in there along with some water. What are your thoughts on the bottled green tea????????????????0 -
When it comes to drinking green tea i never use the tea bags... i always buy the green tea powder called "matcha"
tastes waaaay better! and if you mix it into visalus it tastes JUST like green tea ice cream!0 -

Bottled green tea is the equivalent of soda from a health standpoint. It's mostly just flavored to taste like tea, plus all of the antioxidant benefits of tea are only available from fresh brew, the amount of time that it sits during the bottling, packaging, and shipping process would eliminate all of the benefits.0 -
I've been drinking a "diet" version of green tea for the last 6months and I am convinced it has helped me to lose weight. Two cups a day and increase your exercise...seems to work for me!!0

Wow, thanks for all of the responses! I do take my coffee with milk and equal...I love the taste and don't go overboard with the amount I consume. Does anyone drink a ton of coffee but still manage to keep their teeth white? I'm starting to notice that mine haven't been so much and it's definitely from coffee consumption...0
