"you should count your blessings"

is what I was told recently for being naturally thin....
I'm sorry, but aside from that, I have never eaten any food in excess. I used to be skinny fat, but have been working on changing that with the foods I eat. I have not completely cut anything out, but definitely do not keep "junk" food sitting around the house anymore. We used to buy 2-3 bags of chips, i.e. Doritos, Cheetos, etc. every time we went grocery shopping. Now, rather than buy those bags to have a "grab when you're hungry snack" I only buy the fun-sized bag on occassion when I am craving chips.
I have to kindly agree to disagree when I am told things of that nature, because while my genes may have played a part in my size, so did my discipline, hard work, and lifestyle changes. This didn't happen purely out of "luck".
/ end rant
They tell you to count your blessings that you have good genes because if they are fat they can blame it on their genes.
lol, my mind is a little more "you are what you eat" tracked, though....0 -
I had a therapist tell me that once...I did not go back.
I had an oral surgeon tell me the slipped disc in my jaw that prevented me from being able to open my mouth more than 13mm without pain was, "Just the way God made you."
I'm an Atheist. :indifferent: I didn't go back, either.
My regular jive old dentist was able to tweak the bite guard that the oral surgeon made, and had my jaw functioning normal again in a few months.0 -
Attitude is everything, and I truly believe everyone should count their blessings... because you are focusing on positive things. Life can be hard, but there is always something to be thankful for. For example, my life has been difficult for the last 6+ months (blood clot, heart Afib, cancer diagnosis, surgery, radiation) BUT I am thankful for the love of family and a roof over my head. I found out I am stronger than I think. Try counting your blessings on a regular basis...it works wonders.0

I totally get what you're saying. I get a lot of those comments too. Yes, my weight has always been reasonable. I've always been in the habit of reasonable eating. Have I always been fit? Absolutely not. Skinny fat? You bet. I'm trying really hard to change that now. YOU are an inspiration to me!
When people assume I eat anything and everything I want and don't work out, they're just wrong. And it's kind of insulting. I usually follow up a comment like that with something along the lines of, "Thank you for the compliment. However, I do eat a reasonable diet and work out regularly."0 -
While I'm probably totally the opposite of you genetically, I feel this so much! I've lost close to half my goal and everyone keeps saying that I'm lucky that I have willpower?!?!?! WTF ... I make a choice, ALMOST every day  , to do the right thing. That's not luck or a blessing, that's a CHOICE.0

Wise response. I like it. And, thank you! Oh, this is the first year I didn't have a single GS cookie... I cry. (not because I'm too good for them, though, but I wasn't at work when they were selling them and never seem to have cash at the stores when the cuties are out front with them - therwise, they WOULD be mine and I'd eat them in moderation).
I do count my blessings for the knowledge I've obtained and put into use over the past 245 days since I joined MFP. I just think being told that I should over being "naturally" fit isn't why I'll count my blessings (since I don't believe in it).0 -

Ok the GS mom in me is coming out. You can still support them and buy what is called a Gift of Caring. You pay for a box that the troop then donates to a cause of their choice. My daughters troop sends them to deployed troops.
OK back to your regularly scheduled thread...0 -

I used to be one of those of those people before I joined mfp, and you my friend help me changed my point of view of such things. Thank you and you know i puffy heart you0

My husband and I have a conversation about this quite often. He thinks I am SO lucky that I have such a high metabolism and can eat anything I want and stay very lean. The thing of it is, he's right and he's wrong. I eat WAY better than him health-wise- I make wise choices throughout the day, I drink only water and tea, and I am very active. I do eat whatever I want, but I don't binge. Even if it is a very rich item, I don't eat a lot of it.
At the same time he is right though. I am naturally thin. It is easier for me to make good choices for myself. For example, I have hated soft drinks since I was a kid, I have always been active, it is easy for me to order a grilled chicken sandwich instead of a burger when I eat out. I like vegetables. I like healthy stuff. I can go to a chinese buffet and fix a plate with whatever I want, eat it, and then leave- I do not do seconds and my plate might have a fried spring roll and a crab puff, but it is also full of veggies, rice and meat. My point is, it is easier for me to make wise choices and I get full and can walk away from the food. I have an abnormally lean body, but there is a lot I do to stay that way.
I assume that for many people it is just not that simple but I do understand how insulting it is for someone to negate all of your hardwork and good choices because you are thin.0 -
I think you should say EXACTLY what you posted next time someone says that to you!0

Favorite quote of all time.
"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." -- Albus Dumbledore.
Love that!!0 -

I did. Well, except I didn't tell her at times (many, in fact) she appeared underweight, because I've had people do that to me, too and didn't really care much for it, when I was trying to gain the weight back.0 -
It just goes to show.. what really is "Perfect"... get people saying negative things to people becasue their over weight, and for people being too skinny, for people being to muscular, for being too short, or too tall... Too much damn hatin! I think you look great. You have worked hard for what you have.. and anyone who says anything other is just down rght jealous.. I know I AM.. But i also know ill be there someday!:drinker:0

What about the comment, "Oh, have a [insert disgusting food item in ridiculous proportion here], you're skinny, you can eat it."
Uh, no thanks, I'm skinny partly because I don't gorge myself on crap like that, thank you very much!0 -

I literally had a friend "jokingly" tell me to go eat a cheeseburger, because I asked if there were size XS tanks. Now, said friend knows I've been training for competitions and making better food choices. Not to say I will never or have never had a cheeseburger or a flipping sammich (which I have been told needs to be forced down my throat), but come on, people. No need to be rude.0 -
Attitude is everything, and I truly believe everyone should count their blessings... because you are focusing on positive things. Life can be hard, but there is always something to be thankful for. Yes, staying positive and thankful is the way to go. I have heart A-fib also, I have decided to deal with it and go on with my life!0 -

I think you're reading too much out of these posts... I simply meant I was counting my blessings and not sitting around crying about things I can't change.. Gee's0 -

hmm, it was just a question.... :flowerforyou:0 -
I've had problems with people telling me that I'm crazy for working out as much as I do, and posting about it on Facebook. One girl I grew up with said, " Lol Leah I'm jealous honey cause what the hell do u need to loose u been the same since we were kids." Like you, I've dealt with the skinny fat, but trying to be healthy, thin and happy with what I see when I look in the mirror. I just get annoyed that people think that just because I'm not heavy, that I don't struggle with my weight, or have image issues, too.0
