1. Toning doesn't exist.
2. You want calluses? dead-lifts, rock climbing, farmers walks, dig holes.
3. Want to get strong? do Starting Strength, 5x5, New rules to lifting. Pick one and get fit
4. You don't want calluses? use lotion.0 -
I use gloves because I don't want calluses. I know that makes me not-so-bad-*kitten* but whatever.0

This...I don't have to have hands like a construction worker just because I can lift like one! :flowerforyou:0 -
I don't quite know what you want, how to tone AND how to build calluses??
Toning = building muscle and lowering body fat levels so you have definition. How much definition depends on how long your body fat % is.
Deadlifts are quite good at creating calluses. If you don't want them you can either wear gloves or moisturise. I don't do either and get some quite bad calluses straight after a workout, but they're mostly gone a few hours later. I can still see / feel them but they're not that bad.0 -
Along with what everyone else said, your gloves should match your purse.0

Of course they have to match - kicking butt is so much more fun if you are colour coordinated....0 -

^^^ this too. My hands are so small I sometimes struggle with grip and gloves really improved this as well as stopping blisters0 -
My callouses are hard earned and I never moisturize or "shave" them, all my friends who do end up tearing. Good callous builders are pull ups, deadlifts, any bodyweight exercise on the rings & heavy power cleans.0

The best way to tone up your palm calluses is through low weight, high rep lifts (the lower and higher respectively, the better).0

Hey now.. My gloves match my outfits... cause if they didn't I'd have a heart attack that I wasn't 100% matching from head to toe.
To OP:
Personally I hate when my hands get torn up from lifting.. so I bought gloves and it's much better. Also stops my hands from slipping when I'm holding the bar.
As far as "toning" goes, what exactly are you looking for... that is such a broad term that it could mean almost anything.0 -
