Does anyone have a recommendation for a good set of scales suitable for the home -- a set that gives an accurate reading?

I use the tanita ironman scales. Accurate enough for me. It is very repeatable (aka you can take your weight several times in a row and get pretty much the same numbers) and I think if you control all the other things that affect your weight like time of day, it is pretty good. I like all the info it gives. The electric pads that measure your body fat and other things can be sensitive to how moist your feet are, though. If you measure before a shower and after, your body fat changes a couple percent.

I got a glass one from Walmart, thinner make, has fat readings too. Very consistent results

I just bought the Weight Watchers scale and plugged in my information and it was right on the money from other scales at the gym show. Also has the other scales in it as well including water weight, bmi, etc. Great buy to me!

I have the Ozeri touch. It's great - saves 8 profiles (we only use 2), gives fat, water, muscle, bone. Got it on Amazon.

i use a simple bathroom scale, a digital scale for wrestling at the school i work at and a medical scale at the gym where i work out. all 3 give me the same reading within a pound. I weigh myself every friday at about the same time, what i think matters the most , is that you identify the trend and not rely on the scale only. If your pumping iron and eating healthy but your weight only fluctuates a pound or two , yet your clothes get baggy , the scale wont tell you that. Basically what i'm saying is dont waste a bunch of money on some fancy scale, good luck.
