This is gonna kill ya! I almost busted a gut laughing. The following quote by the National Grocers Association was in response to comments made by Michelle Obama on her own White House garden.

“In this economy the last thing we need is people growing their own food. Despite what people may think food is not recession proof and the government should not be encouraging people out of supporting our industry,” said Kevin Walker of the NGA. “If this takes hold our members will be devastated and will be forced to close their doors. It’s very difficult for any independent grocer at the best of times but in this economy and now with the First Lady advocating this type of activity, we do not have a lot of recourse available to us.”

Are they joking? Seriously? Wow. Heaven forbid that everyday people, who are themselves hurting financially, and would otherwise not be able to afford vegetables or only be able to afford a few, grow their own gardens??? Say it isn't so!!
Amazing.

 Huh?? Seriously?? Wow. Just wow.

I heard a couple of weeks ago that there is actually a move afoot to "outlaw" personal gardens. I CERTAINLY hope that never gets passed. What a world we live in. :noway:

Are you kidding?!:noway: We have been growing a vegetable garden for years now. It's not about the money, it's about how delicious snow peas and tomatoes taste right off the vine. That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a while!! WOW:noway:

    It's called Socialism........

The poor guy would probably drop dead on the spot if he saw my garden. I spend several weeks each fall canning and we live off of it all winter :) I find few things more satisfying they feeding my family food we worked so hard to grow, I know its healthier, cheaper, and ORGANIC!! woohoo

Okay. I know it is a lot to read... But here is the link for the bill that they are proposing.

    http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-875

It is a lot of legal speak that I don't fully understand. But from what I can tell, it should only effect farms that sell their wares to the public.

I've actually inquired with our great Mayor about the availability of abandoned lots for gardening in these tough economic times. I have yet to hear back from him. The way I see it, there shouldn't be idle land anywhere in this country!

Burpee has actually sold out of certain kinds of seeds!

I've been doing some reading - news articles. I've printed off the bill - all 56 pages!! But haven't tackled it. From what I can see so far, the real concern is the vagueness of the bill and the potential for abuse and power mongering. That doesn't happen in America, does it? :ohwell:

It's interesting, at any rate. If I make it through the bill - I'll post my "official" opinion!! However, it will still be just my opinion  I also have yet to determine Monsanto's true involvement in this. A PR guy posted a lot saying they're not involved and do not benefit from it . . . etc. Yeah I believe that! :noway: I do know that they have won lawsuits where their GM seeds crosspollinated with Non-GM seeds and they sued the farmer and won. Confiscated crops and got $. So that may tweak my ability to believe/trust them much!

I'm having a hard time seeing how they are going to enforce no private gardens. I want to be there when they tell Martha Stewart she can't have a garden. I see jail time again, for assault:laugh:

  Yep - I'd pay money to see that!!

It probably would never actually happen - just another case of mass hysteria! With all the propeganda out there, it is hard to sort it all out. That's why I going to take a run at reading the bill. Wish me luck!
