Dozens of new magic bullets come along every year, and in a few years, you can't find them anymore.

    What does that tell you?

Not to answer your question, but just something that was funny to me...

I've been drinking acai juice for years, after I learned of it's high antioxidant properties, thus potentially preventing cancer or for anti-aging. You know...what "the experts" were saying, at the time.

Maybe last year or so, I was shopping, and the subject of weight loss came up with a sales associate. She said she'd been consuming acai, but that it wasn't working. Admittedly out of the loop on weight loss fads, I remember thinking, 'When did acai go from antioxidant to weight loss supplement?!?'

So true. Just yesterday, I read a study comparing anti-oxidant content in various types of beverages. I thought for sure acai, red wine, green tea would win the day. Nope. The winner was very cheap, common hibiscus tea--any of the Celestial zinger teas. Things need not be exotic and expensive to have amazing health benefits.

Sorry to hijack the thread but, just out of curiosity, what rank was acai given? I've seen a lot of antioxidant lists, and it's as though no two are alike (unless it's just a copy of another list). But acai is often not even included because it is a relatively recent discovery (in terms of the antioxidant discussion) and/or not widely available to many. It's said to be several times (4? 5? +?) more potent than either blueberries or pomegranate, if that helps.

EDITED TO ADD: Is that study online? Do you have a link?

Your mama was right when she told you "If it sounds to good to be true it is"

You'll notice that many of the websites touting the virtues of a product will have folksy sounding disclaimers like "I’m not a nutrition guru or anything like that. I’m just a mom who found out a diet routine that works better than these overpromoted products you gave a chance (you know, the numerous useless ones?)." The objective is to disarm the critical thinking portion of your brain and get you to whip out your credit card based solely on anecdotal evidence. This particular website was hyping the idea of an acai colon cleanse - what a load of (pardon my pun) crap!

I've read some credible information regarding the anti-oxidant properties of the acai berry but it's something they share with many berries that are readily available and much less expensive. Personally, I'll stick with a half cup of blueberries on my morning cereal.

This is a video about the study. I don't have a link to the study in full text online:

Huh. Curious how none of the usual antioxidant suspects (blueberries, pomegranate, acai, etc.) are even mentioned. But maybe I'll remember this little video when I'm shopping for herbal teas, in the future. :-)
