Leg work without squats? (knee injury)

I used to LOVE lifting heavy, doing squats and DLs, running, etc. But in late November I tore the cartilage in my knee with a fall on some ice, and I basically haven't been able to do SQUAT (much less squats themselves) since. I've been going to physio and doing some swimming, but even that is painful at times because of a lax ACL.

Anyone have any suggestions for how to build muscle in my legs again without doing what I used to?

That's going to be tough, sorry about the injury. You do have a physical therapist? If not, get one and just do what they suggest. The only thing I can think of is swiss ball squats. Put the ball between the middle of your back and the wall and squat as far as you can. Not sure, you really need a professional for this issue.
