Fitness index / calorie burn multipliers

Hello MFP,
I'm partially injured (achilles) so unable to run at high intensity (my preferred method of exercise) and am stuck doing strength / intervals / heavy cardio in the gym.
The first couple of weeks I felt that the burns were really accurate - 100cal on the rower or bike felt like 100cal running. Then the body adjusted, and I have to crank up the resistance to get the same workrate. But with the resistance up the burn figures go through the roof and I have a really hard time believing the figures.
Do any of you apply multipliers or adjustments to calorie burn estimates as you get fitter? Is there a fitness 'index' which can be applied to adjust calorie burn estimates to your fitness level?

Sorry can't offer a mathematical solution, have you considered using a heart rate monitor?0
