carbs or calories

My two co-workers today told me that they keep track of their carbs to lose weight. I thought that is something is high in carbs that it also means it is high in calories? I have a headache from discussing lunch choices with a co-worker! She said my hotdog was the same as her angus beef burger (the patty was the size of a hockey puck!!)

The only carb would be the bun (plus your hot dog has other things in it they have count as carb). But calorie wise the burger was probably more unless you had a gigantic hot dog.0

Unless you have issues with blood sugar, it may not be the best choice to go low-carb. Some people do very well with it and some people just can't function well on low-carb. If you have blood sugar issues, low-carb is very helpful! And probably she wasn't too far off - the average hot dog has 240+ calories. Very low fat ground beef would be in the ball park for 3 - 4 oz. :flowerforyou: If counting calories is working well for you - keep it up!! If you are having difficulties - maybe time to think about changing something. I've been eating right about my calorie limit, but having too many carbs so not losing weight. But I have Type 2 diabetes also.
*edit: I just looked it up - according to MFP 5 oz of 95% lean ground beef is 229 calories!0 -
I am diabetic..........
So I watch carbs. i don't count calories and I am free with my fat intake.
I end up eating around 1500-1750 in calories a day and that provides me with ample energy to function normally.0 -

Lioness - was that about what you were eating when you lost the 30 lbs? Cus if I eat that much right now, I won't lose 'nutin. But I've never counted carbs and calories at the same time! Too much for my brain to handle I guess. Logging here would help. I haven't done low-carb since I joined - not seriously low-carb.0 -

Hot dogs are high in calories and sodium for a little weiner lol
I not just count my carbs but i count my fat and my protein as well
If you take in too many carbs protein fat ect.. your body converts it to fat-
I use a customized base for my calorie percentages because MFP is pretty low
Your body absorbs simple carbs fast- where as complex carbs take a little longer-0 -

I only eat complex carbs and I have plenty of energy and I workout very intensely in the gym and run around with my kids and work full time ect.. I suprisingly have more energy because Im not eating the bad carbs such as simple carbs example white bread- actually I am not eating any bread
The only carb thing I eat is brown rice, plain oatmeal, and plain sweet potatoes- besides what I get out of vegetables-
Most people that do low carb aren't eating enough thats why they don't have energy0 -
A calorie is a calorie is a calorie. Eating fewer carbs will cut your calorie count. Do what works for you.:flowerforyou:0

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I have been doing 'Hotdog Friday' with my co-worker now for a couple of years and I think it's time to switch to something healthier! There is a subway across the street from our work and I looked online at a 6" roast beef sub and it looks like a much better choice calorie wise.0
