Ok. So I have been reading that it's bad to set your total calories intake to 1200 but what if that is what myfitnesspal assigned/suggest to me. I'm a shorty! ...does that make any difference?? Help, not trying to starve and gain it all back. I want to be fit, healthy, and keep the weight that I may lose off. Thanks.

Mine is set at 1200. I think it's fine. The lower it's set though, the more important it is to eat back exercise calories. At least I think so.

It's certainly fine if that's what mfp says! I am doing around 1200 calories and I am tall with 150lbs to lose. I am doing it at the suggestion of my nutritionist and under a doc supervision. Do what is best for you!

Height does make a difference, but check you don't have your weight loss set too high. You want to aim for around 0.5-1lb per week. If you stick at 1200, make sure you eat back your exercise calories. You need at least 1200, probably closer to 1300, just to breathe.
  • Mine is 1200 and I am doing great. Just make those 1200 calories count.

I'm also short with my calories set at 1200. I try to stay under 1400 a day if I exercise.

Look for your BMR (basal metabolic rate) ..... this tells you how low you can go. You should be able to google this, enter your height, weight, age, etc.

According to my BMR and the suggestion to drop it 500-1000 calories a day, 1200 *seems* to high. If I dropped it 500 calories a day, I'd be a little over 1000.... so I'm not sure that that is right. 1200 is the smallest amount they'll suggest to a person - but I'm a little person - and am starting to think I may need less.... It's confusing, concerning, disheartening.... :( I'd love some good advice on this as well.

You may be a shorty, but that doesn't mean you have to starve.

    I'm under 5ft and losing at 1700+

1200 is the minimum MFP can set, and the minimum recommended for a female.

Have a good read of all the stickied threads above to work out how MFP works.

    Research your BMR - http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/bmr/

Whilst MFP sets a minimum of 1200, many people think the minimum you should eat is your BMR.

As long as you eat between your BMR and TDEE you will lose weight.

You don't deduct the 500 from your BMR, you deduct it from your TDEE.

BMR is your coma calories - then you apply a multiplier depending on your activity levels.

I did multiply it - by 1.2 for sedentary, as I have a desk job. :(

Wow, that website says I should eat over 2200 calories a day with the exercise I'm doing. No way would I lose weight on that. At all. Ever.

I am glad that the BMR info was posted. I too was set at 1200 calories - working out a few times a week, eating the recommended calories 98% of the time and wasn't losing anything but the same 2 lbs bouncing back and forth. I am also tired and cranky and lethargic. So, I calculated my BMR and went through everything else, looks like its at 1480 calories. I will try that for a while and see what happens.
