Calorie Setting Confusion

Ok..so i started on MFP at 1200 calories like the site said to do. I gained 2lbs two weeks in a row.
I went up to 1500 calories and sometimes i'm 100 below, sometimes i'm 100 above and i lost 5lbs the first 3 weeks, then gained 2.
Now, as i'm reading i'm seeing a lot of success at 1200 cal..and a lot of success at 2100 cal.
I just figured out my BMR is 1680....if that helps you any in the advice you have to give.
I just wish there was some magic formula to know exactly how many calories i should eat. Then again, on my list of wishes, that one would probably not make the top 5. top 10 maybe;)
Long way of saying..how did you "pick your number"?? And why??
I was toying with going to a nutritionist but how do i know that 4 nutritionists wouldn't give me 4 different answers? Just like 4 sites on a google search gave me 4 different calorie limits?
Help!

You should eat around your BMR as that is the amount your body needs just to keep you alive. You can play with the number a bit but I would'nt go under by more than 100 unless you see a doctor.
Edit - wrote would, meant wouldn't lol0 -
i set my goal as my BMR (1845) and i eat back my exercise calories.
last month, even with going over calories every week i still lost a pound a week..0
