I don't have a HRM so looking for an alternative way to figure out my calorie burn.
I commute most days by cycling. On the way home I gain 160 meters in 3.35km, and it usually takes me 20 minutes, on average the gradient of the hill is 5.3% and I travel around 10km/hr.

I have looked online for a calculator that takes into account going uphill, but can't find one. Mapmyfitness puts my calories burn at 70 cals (I'm 58kg). Does this sound right? To me it feels a bit too low but I'm really not sure.

That sounds about right.... from what I'm reading you're traveling <4km at a pace of 10Km/hr so that's about 15 minutes of work right?

Perhaps... but surely you would exert more energy cycling up hill compared with on the flat??? Even if traveling at the same speed.

Presumably you make up for it by having an easier ride on the downhill? I would just log the ride based on the relevant average speed bracket. I reackon it all evens itself out, over time :)

Ummmm... I never thought about that, it's a good idea. But the timing would be wrong as I travel a different way down the hill than I do going back up the hill.

Hehehe, so you admit that you have a downhill section? :p

 lol! Of course there is!

But not on the way home.... that's all uphill. The downhill bit is going to work in the morning, I have a slight rise to get out of my street and then it's all down!!! Mostly freestyle, apart setting off from junctions and lights. I think I'll just have to get a HRM to fully understand how much energy I am using.
