how much is enough exercise?

every night when the day is over i always feel like i haven't done enough that day, but what is enough when it comes to exercise?
i need to lose weight about 40 pounds and get fit, then i would like to exercise to stay fit.
I usually exercise 6-7 days a week about 30minutes- 1 hour and then all through the day when i have time i do squats,sit ups, jumping jacks and sometimes weights. my main exercise is treadmill at 4-5 mph and some sprints, or i use the elliptical.
