Hiya, a bit of advice based on people's experiences would be welcomed :) I've been doing C25K, as well as some home aerobics sessions, and have started suffering from what I am fairly sure is shin splints in my left leg - it's pretty sore! It started coming on monday during my C25K sesion, yesterday I took the day off other than some moderate walking into town and back, but today it's even worse - it was hurting every time I depressed the clutch when driving grrr

I'm in 2 minds as to whether or not I should do my C25K session or not tonight, part of me thinks I should rest up more, but the other part of me REALLY doesn't want to let the routine slide as this happened to me a few weeks ago when it snowed, and I had to start out all again. I've JUST started feeling a bit fitter and had a mini NSV when I put on some trousers today that WERE skintight (and digging in incomfortably!) but are now just nicely fitting (yay!). And yes, I DO plan on investing in some nice trainers, maybe my hi-tecs aren't cutting it...

I'd really appreciate any thoughts or input from people who have been here and got through it - what were your experiences of shin splints?

I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't know what a C25K is but I did go through a period in time where I had the pain you are describing from brisk walking on a track. My mistake was I was warming up enough. Once I changed that, I was fine. Don't know if this will help but I wish you the best of luck and good health.

why just your left leg though - could be any kind of over-work injury. I'd use common sense on this kinda thing - if it eases when running then keep going. if it gets worse then stop and rest. If it persists seek medical advice. Don't worry about your c25k you can repeat a week if required.

You should be wearing proper running shoes regardless.

This is interesting - do shin splints normally come in both legs then? I figured I was only getting it in one leg as my gait is probably random! I have awful hip/knee/ankle joints so quite possibly have a tendency to favour one side over the other.

Generally would be in both legs, although one could be worse than the other unless you have one leg! Listen to your body, it knows how to protect itself. Pain is a warning, don't ignore it, just be sensible. If you had a sore head would you bang your head off a wall?

If you other joint pain then you would begin to wonder if you are over-doing it.

Maybe get a sports massage expert to look you over and check your feet to make sure your not pronating (turning your foot in). And definayely proper running shoes .... A running shop would be a good start as they can advise you of best type of trainers for type of running you're doing. Hope that helps.
