Calorie deficit is what makes you lose weight. You can create that by eating less, or by eating the same and exercising more, or any combination.

Yep. But there's other benifits to exercise besides burning cals.

Interesting. I cannot realistically lose weight without exercising. I need the boost in my metabolism. I need the muscle to burn more calories. I have tried so many times to do this through diet alone and it never works! Only when I suck it up and get my butt to the gym do I see results. And by gym, I mean weights. Not walking on the treadmill talking to my friends.
Like a previous poster said, we are all different. This just happens to be what works for me.

...I lose pounds in the kitchen and inches in the gym, if you want to see it that way....

This is how I've always thought of it, also. And I have both of plenty to work off. LOL! Can I borrow the phrase from time to time?

i have fibromyalgia, so my new interest in exercise has been to increase my stamina, flexibility, and well, just get moving again! i've lost more weight though after starting to track calories and eating more fruits and vegetables. The calorie thing has made a big difference, but the two definitely go hand in hand!
