Frustration! Help please!

I have been getting more and more frustrated over the last couple weeks. I regularly (well up until a few weeks ago) run 3, 4, 5, sometimes 6 miles about 4 times a week. I love to run, and I love how it makes me feel. HOWEVER, my quads have been giving out on me. I can barely make it to a mile and a half, or even two miles, and it takes me as long to do that as it took me to run 3.5 miles. They feel like they can't even hold my weight (I am 5'6, 168.) Has anyone else had this problem? I don't know how to fix it other than doing squats/lunges and maybe getting my cardio in with the bike. Thoughts? Help?

  • Light weights would help to start to strengthen your muscles and would be less likely to give out....

When you say give out, what do you mean? Are you falling on your *kitten*? You should really see a doctor about this because it sounds so unusual for someone's quad to just give out.

I did a Half Marathon in December and suffered an I-T Band injury in both legs. I was told by a Personal Trainer that worked with me after the fact that my hips were weak as were my hamstrings. She suggested stretches to strengthen both. She also suggested doing the Eliptical Glider backwards to work my hamstrings.

I really don't know what is going on with you but maybe your Quads are feeling overworked and you need to strengthen your hamstrings. Try some weights that will work and strengthen them and try to glider backwards some.

    Good Luck!
  • Sorry, I should have chosen more appropriate words. I mean my legs fatigue WAAAY faster than any other part of my body. So when I can keep running, not even breathing too heavy, my quads feel weak and shaky.
  • Try doing some biking for 2 out of your 4 workouts. It's better on your knees and legs and will help strengthen you for running. Running is GrEaT exercise but it's not s great for joints and such.
