HRM

Okay so I have wanted a HRM ever since I started this site but I live in a small town... so I finally saw some at the Walmart this weekend so I picked one up. They are just wrist watches with no chest strap but claim to count calories.
Mine says my heart rate is anywhere from 48-95 in a matter of seconds, while I am doing the same activity (sitting down even) its never even close... I left it off my wrist last night with the calorie counter still on and somehow I still burned calories even though it wasn’t attached to my wrist?
This wasn’t cheap, $62.99 (and for Walmart who is usually cheaper). Am I doing something terribly wrong or are the HRM w/o the chest strap generally less effective?

Yeah those can be really inaccurate and I'm surprised it was so expensive.
You should be able to return it minus a restocking fee ... Get one with a chest strap.0 -
You may want to let this person know since they were inquiring about the one from Walmart

Grrr!! I wish I would've know that yesterday. I just picked up a Polar F4 from Sports Authority for $89.99 & $10 warranty.0 -
I also have a chest-strap-less HRM from Walmart (Sportline S7)... mine was only $20, though. The reason it kept tracking calories, even when not attached to your wrist, is because it bases that calculation off your last heart rate reading. It doesn't change the tracking until you update your heart rate again. Unfortunately, you can't just turn it on and forget it, like the chest-strap ones. I try to check my heart rate as often as possible when I'm working out, which can be inconvenient, and look kind of dumb. Usually when I'm on my elliptical machine, I'll check my heart rate every minute, which hopefully keeps it pretty accurate. If you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help.0

I would return it and get one with a chest strap. I have a Reebok Precision and LOVE it! I got it on ebay for $44. I was going to get the polar F7 but couldn't afford the $100. There are quite a few other people on this site too that really like the Reebok one. I will go try to find a link for you.0
