Taking measurements

I would love to start taking consistent measurements, but I don't know the "correct" places to measure for my waist, hips and thighs.

Does everyone tend to measure just above their belly button for their waist measurement? What about for your hips? Do you measure the thickest part around your butt? LOL And as for thighs, do you measure towards the top or middle?

Sorry if this question is a bit dumb...I was just wondering what everyone else does!

Love that you posted this - I was just telling my husband I needed to start measuring. Monday's weigh-in I will add them in. :)

I was wondering the same thing, I actually Googled it. For waist it's above your belly button, if you were to lean to the side wherever it creases is your waist. Your hips is around the thickest part of your butt. Hope the Internet is right and i'm curious to see what other MFP members say.

  • Doesn't matter where you measure, just make sure it is the same place each time.

I was thinking about this the other day. I'd like to know the correct place to take the measurments too as I'm not even sure if I'm taking them in the same spot each time so I'm wondering how accurate the numbers are from measurement to measurement.

I had to google it... because I had wondered the same thing...it showed me a video as one of the answers ( theres a video on youtube.com that shows EXACTLY where to measure... )

I always feel like I need to get a tattoo or something showing me where I measure at. Chest, arms & waist I can do well, but hips & thigh are difficult even with a mirror... It's just harder to know where I had it last without bending over and thereby ruining the measurement. I think if you can find somewhere that you can consistently measure, that's good. I used to measure at my belly button, cuz it was easier to find. Now my "natural waist" is easy to find so i use it, it's the "correct" place to measure.

measure wherever you want, just make sure it is the same place each time. i actually wrote on my measurement log for hips (since i keep changing in that area) 2 inches below belly button. so now each time I won't wonder 'where should i measure hips today'... i will just move 2 inches down from navel and measure there.
