My mother in law just started this diet where calories don't matter, as long as you stay under 20grams of fat a day. She has lost 7 pounds in the first week, so I am really tempted to try it, but I haven't heard of it, and was wondering what everyone else thought.

I was getting about 40 to 50g of fat a day and I lost about 4lb, I wasn't meant to be losing weight though lol.

Here is a site about what fat does to your body:

I'm not saying this can be effective, but for how long do you think she can keep it up? It says that a low fat diet can trigger cravings. So at the moment, 20% of my calorie intake is 372kcal from a 1860kcal diet. The amount of grams that is would be 372/9 which is about 41g of fat. My goal for fat is currently 25% which is 52g. It was about 30% I think and I managed to lose weight. I counted calories and it's that easy if you don't lie to yourself and log everything in.

Lowfat diets were the thing 15 or 20 years ago. Fat makes you feel satiated and your body needs healthy fats. I think limiting overall caloric intake is considered a healthier way to lose.
