Being in a plateau for several months i decided to eat back my excersise calories as recomended by u all on here. Ive been having a hard time eating them back without feeling horribly full so the suggestions here are small healthy high calorie foods such as alvacados....so today i got me an alvacado to put on my sandwich. I decided to eat the whole thing. Then i went to log it in....wow it was super high in calories and fat. I think the fat bothers me more then the calories. 250 cals and 23 gr fat! I feel like i screwed up my whole day by eating it! Need some encouragment i guess...lol.... Sigh to eating back excersise calories.

I don't even bother watching fat grams when they come from healthy sources such as nuts, avocados, olive oil, etc. For proof, just look at my diary today! Avocados (like nuts and seeds) are incredibly healthy but calorie dense.

Nothing is wrong with avocados. You just learned today that an entire avocado is more than one portion. Next time, use half.

    Easy peasy!

Avocado is one of the healthiest things you can eat. Use less next time.

Also, unless your avocado was pretty small, like barely bigger than an egg, it was probably more like 500 calories.

Weigh your food for better accuracy.

You have to reprogram yourself out of the "fat is bad" mode. Only some fats are bad (such as trans fat, but there are exceptions there as well). Healthy fats such as avocados, olive oil, nuts, etc are good for you. You should consume them without guilt. Sort of like sugar and carbs in fruits and veggies. I eat a diet that is fairly high in good fats. I'm losing weight just fine. :)

Thanks lol. I looked it up online said 1/5 of a medium alvacado was 50 calories. I felt it was medium. But i guess not. Weighing is a problem for me. Im usually a measurer not a weigher. Dont hAve a scale atm

Apparently, they're supposed to be brown...that's how you know they're ripe!

I have found a way to reduce that (turning brown)

Keep the seed in the half you're preserving, and then stretch some plastic wrap over the cut side. It will still brown a litlle, but it won't dry out.

I got a digital at wal-mart for only $20. Awesome investment, I realized I had been cheating myself out of a lot of portions, and wildly overestimating others....Way worth it to me to invest the $20!

Avocados have healthy fat in them. Good for your heart and cholesterol, eaten in moderation. As long as you dont have an entire avocado every day ...you're fine. :) keep your chin up.

Spray or dip in lemon juice to keep from browning. Leave pit in the unused portion.

This also works for Guacamole. Just put the stone in with the dip and then avoid eating it.

Little bit of lemon juice on them prior to the plastic wrap or air tight container will keep the brown to a minimum.

Next time you try saving the other half do this: leave the seed in there, sprinkle a bit of lemon juice over it, and tightly wrap in plastic wrap. Don't use a sandwich baggie, use saran wrap instead. When air gets to the fruit, it makes it turn brown. When you use the other half (the next day or two at most), you'll notice the part where you left the seed in will be greenest when you remove it. AND YES, DON'T PAY ATTN TO MONOUNSATURATED FATS, they're good for fat loss and your heart!!! Saturated fat is what should be avoided!

yum love avocados! a way to keep them from browning is to squeeze lemon or lime juice on them, that's why (good) guacamole doesn't turn brown fast... the lime juice

I eat avocados alot. Some good tips here. I am confused about calories though as the database has conflicting info. I've been weighing out the scooped portion and finding the Costco mediums come out to about 330 calories based on 167 per 100 grams.

Does anyone have reliable info as to calories? 500 is pretty far out of the ballpark I've been using.

    Wow avocados are...

    GREAT!!!

They're super healthy for you, the fat is healthy fat, they've got all sorts of vitamins and minerals, they taste great on their own, and they take on flavors like you wouldn't believe. What's not to love! In our house, amongst other uses, we use avocados in place of mayonnaise. You can't imagine how great tuna or chicken salad is, with no mayo, avocado instead! You gotta try it to believe it.

Always use the entries in the database that have been entered by the MFP Staff.

You can find these by looking for the entries in the database that have NO ASTERISK in front of them.

When it comes to any fruit or vegetable, the easiest way is to enter "Avocado raw" - if you always enter "raw" it cuts the list way down and makes it much easier to find the NO ASTERISK ones.

Also, if you enter your own food, or EDIT any foods they will also appear with NO ASTERISK (and can then be found in MY FOODS).

  • All the "Fats" from avocados are healthy, and much needed fats. As for eat one whole, sure thing I do that all the time when I have one. imagine egg whites (150 cals max) with spinach (50 cal max) with one whole avocado (350 cals). Eat less, but get more.
Having one avocado per day tastes better then 2 tbsp of EVOO.

I had a whole one for lunch myself. Cut it in half. Half on one tortilla, half on another. Space about an hour apart. Over 600 calories right there.

The thing is, they are so good for us, we can't even sweat that. Good for our skin, good for our brains, good for our hearts. They also help us absorb more nutrients from everything else we eat.

    Splurge now and then.

My dear friend has been dieting using the book "Clean." It's like the UBER-militant version of Tosca Reno's books. It highly advocates the big green fruit - so she sometimes has two a day. She has lost over 50 pounds since November. While I don't think it's good to drop that much weight that quickly, just know that you can eat two avos a day and drop serious poundage.
