New to running

So i'm not much of a runner but I've decided to do a 5k at the end of April. I've been doing the couch 2 5k program and have been doing it for about a week. But I've noticed my shins have really started to hurt when I run. Are these shin splints? Or maybe just a minor pain due to running? Also does anyone have any tips on running a 5k? I hate running but i know It's a great way to get exercise and would love not to hate it so much!
